Radical Park

Guys, my friends and I made this movie five years ago for a high school project. I’d say, in no uncertain terms, it’s the greatest film since The Room.

Please watch it and make us famous.

Tom’s Top Ten of Two Thousand Twelve. (Also, my 5000th post!)

Hey followers! Did this last year, figured I would do it again! I preface this list with the same disclaimer as last year- these aren’t my Oscar predictions, or the movies I necessarily think were the “best,” just the movies that I really enjoyed for one reason or another. With that, let’s get started with my honorable mentions.

Honorable Mention #1: Kill List

The only thing keeping this bad boy off the list is the fact that, even though it didn’t get a US release until 2012, it was out in the UK in 2011. Kill List is, at times, funny and endearing, but at most times thrilling, horrifying, and disturbing. It’s impossible to go into the plot too much without ruining the surprise (similar to another film you’ll find way down the list..), but suffice it to say, it’s about two hitmen who get more than they bargain for after accepting a job from some shady individuals. Prepare to be on the edge of your seat for an hour and a half.

Honorable Mention #2: Moonrise Kingdom

This was a heartbreaker to keep out of the Top 10. It’s so heartwarming and funny, and makes you feel 11 years old again (I know that means nothing coming from someone who’s 21.) I think I have trouble putting it higher because I’m not totally warmed up to Wes Anderson yet… but I’m getting there.

Now that we’ve got the Honorable Mentions out of the way, let’s get to the nitty-gritty.

First shot - Rick riding into Atlanta on the horse he found at an abandoned farm house.

Second shot - Glenn leaving Atlanta in the Challenger he stole, headed back to the group’s camp in the hills just outside the city.

Last shot - In my opinion, this shot symbolizes the unity that is needed for humanities survival. Rick’s line of “We’re moving on, Atlanta’s done” just hits that sweet spot. We as a species have become nomads again. We must travel in order to survive. If we stay in one spot forever we won’t be living. We’ll be dead.

Also. Dale’s RV. Fuck yeah.

Good point, but I think the most powerful element of that last shot is the fact that the convoy is moving out of the light and into the shadow. The group is leaving the comfort of life as it was and heading towards darkness and the unknown.

This episode was made during Frank Darabont’s tenure as showrunner, and he’s used this type of shot before. Check out this screenshot from The Shawshank Redemption:

This is just after Andy Dufresne has been in solitary confinement for two months, literally and figuratively the darkest time of his life. He resolves to “get busy living or get busy dying,” putting his escape plot into motion that night. After that, he gets up and walks away. Here’s the last shot from that scene.

Absolutely love when filmmakers use this kind of imagery to say more than dialogue ever could!

The more I see current pictures of some of the people I graduated with,

The less I feel like I want to stay in New Hampshire. Maybe it’s just gonna become my “visit the old country” place…
